With desktop solutions, the software must be downloaded and installed on your computer, and the software can only be accessed by a person sitting at that keyboard. With cloud-based tools, you can access the software and data anywhere at any time- including on a Mac and your mobile phone.

Once downloaded, there is no option on the platform to switch between the Beta Version and original version. FYI Coaches have a resource for a quick tour and tutorial they can send if you reach out!

We will be uploading new resources soon and hope interested teachers will enjoy them all!

All new resources will be under the Teaching tab.

A Phonics resource series will be accessible to all teachers under General Resources. We are sharing this series for anyone who might be interested in enhancing their knowledge to understand, explore or apply principles for early language and literacy development. Currently, there are no new opportunities to access the phonics model, nevertheless invitations to opt into the model are periodically sent out. Please let your coach know if you complete the series and are willing to do a short survey. We are confident that the materials will help for general class applications and would love to know what you think if you check them out.

Also coming soon in November are new resources for recruitment and “Orientation”. FYI Qkids accepts applications on a rolling basis, and is in a highly selective recruitment period. These materials are useful to all teachers who want to be in-the-know about upgrades and changes in Qkids training, plus those who might want to prepare for future recruitment and peer mentorship.

As with any online English teaching company, Qkids has its own set of rules and regulations. If you’re thinking of joining this company, be sure to read through the most important requirements for Qkids teachers.

Qkids Teacher Requirements

It’s important to note that Qkids’ requirements are somewhat different than other online English teaching companies, so be sure to read through them thoroughly.

1. The legal right to work in Canada or the US (not California)

Similar to VIPKID, you must be a citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States or Canada.

Unfortunately, Qkids has followed suit with many other online English teaching companies and has discontinued work with California teachers. This is because of the AB5 bill that was passed in California in 2019, which pertains to independent contractors.

Another important thing to note about Qkids is that they say their servers do not work in other countries besides the USA, Canada, or China. This means they expect you to physically be in one of these three countries.

However, I have friends that have worked with Qkids outside of these countries without a VPN and it worked just fine.

If you plan to teach with Qkids while traveling outside of the US, Canada, or China, I would suggest purchasing a legitimate VPN just to be safe.

2. A Bachelor’s degree

This requirement is non-negotiable and there is no way around it. The Ministry of Education in China has raised the standards for online English teaching companies and requires that all online teachers must hold a Bachelor’s degree or above.

Your Bachelor’s degree can be in any subject; it does not have to be an education degree.

Qkids will check that you hold a Bachelor’s degree at the end of the hiring process. You will need to upload proof of your degree in the form of a diploma.

3. A teaching license OR English teaching certificate

This is one of the Qkids requirements that differs from other online English teaching companies. To work with Qkids, you must have a teaching license from your country of residence OR an English teaching certificate.

Other companies also require a teaching license or certificate but many have structured their own courses for applicants. Qkids expects its applicants to obtain a certificate from a third party.

Qkids TESOL certification

Although this might seem like a pain, it actually might help you in the long run. Having an accredited TESOL/TEFL certification looks REALLY good on resumes and applications.

I highly suggest getting your TESOL/TEFL 120-hour certification through Premier TEFL. Their courses are 100% online, easy to complete, internationally accredited, and recognized worldwide.

4. Experience with children

Another one of Qkids’ requirements is experience working with children. That’s a no-brainer!

You’ll need at least two years of experience working with children in any setting. This doesn’t need to be classroom experience, it could be babysitting, tutoring, mentoring, coaching, etc.

5. Minimum weekly time commitment

Qkids also requires its teachers to open a minimum number of teaching slots each week. You must be available for at least 6 teaching hours per week.

There are other online English teaching companies where this is not one of the requirements, but Qkids expects this.

What Are the Computer Requirements for Qkids?

As an online English teacher, you’ll need the right equipment in order to have a successful classroom. Here are the computer and tech requirements for Qkids:

1. A computer with a built-in camera or webcam

An essential tool for teaching with Qkids is a computer/laptop with a built-in camera or webcam.

In the market for a new laptop to support your online teaching? I’ve always used a Macbook Air to teach classes online. It has worked like a charm and I expect it to last for years and years.

Can I teach for Qkids with an iPad?

Unfortunately, you cannot teach with Qkids from an iPad. Using a proper computer is one of the non-negotiable requirements to teach for Qkids.

2. A headset with microphone

As with any online English teaching company, you’ll need to have a quality headset with a microphone. I use the Logitech headset below and it works really well.

This headset also comes with a mute switch, which definitely comes in handy as an online teacher.

3. Stable internet connection

Having a stable internet connection is an obvious requirement for teaching with Qkids. They recommend a minimum internet upload speed of 2Mbps and a minimum download speed of 4Mbps.

They also stress how important it is for teachers to be wired to the internet. Although they suggest this for all teachers, it is possible to teach with this company without using an ethernet cable.

To be safe, you can pick up this Ethernet cable. It is sold in several different lengths so it can easily reach your router.

How Long Does it Take To Get Hired with QKids?

One of the first questions applicants have about Qkids is, how long does it take to get hired?

The application process takes about two weeks to complete and includes two demo lessons and trial classes.

What Isn’t Required for Qkids?

A few requirements that are unnecessary for teaching with Qkids include teaching materials, a lot of props, and a degree in education.

Qkids provides all of the teaching materials and lessons for you. All you need to do is show up for class and teach. They have also made all of the lessons interactive and fun. Having a lot of props is unnecessary because you’ll be using the slideshow to help teach the concepts.

It’s also a common misconception that you must have a degree in education in order to teach for Qkids. Although it might be helpful in the classroom, a Bachelor’s degree in any subject is acceptable.
